ITZY in Tokyo | A story written at dusk

ITZY's momentum continues as they hold world tours and release their 1st JAPAN album "RINGO." On a pleasant autumn day, what do the girls see and feel as they relax and take a stroll through the cityscape at dusk? YEJI and RYUJIN told us about themselves through question and answer.

YEJI
Wear the autumn air

── How do you feel about walking around Tokyo now?
The colors of the scenery are beautiful! Every place I visited today became my favorite.
── What comes to mind when you hear “Tokyo”?
I've been to a lot of places, but Tokyo Tower has to be my favorite. It may have left a deep impression on me because I saw it when I first came to Japan.
── Do you have a personal style or things you always carry when you go for a walk?
I used to like walking while listening to music, but lately I don't use earphones, and just listen to the sounds of nature around me.
── Please tell us your favorite words and sentences in Japanese that you recently learned!

"ZENZEN"

YEJI & RYUJIN
When two people meet

── What do you always eat when you come to Japan?
YEJI  Japan has a wide variety of desserts and they are all delicious! I especially eat a lot of pudding, cake, and bread. I always go to the convenience store once a day.
── What is popular among the members or what are they paying attention to?
YEJI  When I go overseas for performances, etc., I start buying a lot of famous sweets from that country. I also share with other members what I found delicious.
── What kind of fashion are you feeling this season? Also, do you have any favorite items?
YEJI  I bought a leather jacket. Now that winter is officially here, I want to wear it even more!

ITZY YEJI'S CLEAR* PRIDE

We asked Yeji, who is good at everything. About her pride in the team, countless hours of sweat and effort, and about a fiercely disciplined leader of a girl group called ITZY.

*distinct, vivid, noticeable

TRANSLATION NOTES: 1 - As a custom, ‘Korean second person pronouns do not appear in honorific conversations‘ and some questions were asked in such a way. We kept the third person format in the translation; 2 - We assigned the pronoun ”we“ for the interviewer.

Q: When you think of ITZY’s ‘YEJI’, the image of an all-rounder who is good at everything comes to mind. How do you feel when you hear that you’re good?A: It’s very, very nice. Those words also give me a sense of responsibility. All the while thinking, “I must do well, I must do better.”Q: Whenever ITZY takes a pictorial, you always schedule the call time early in the morning. Usually, one would prefer to start even an hour late because of the (facial) swelling. And we heard you are going to practice today after finishing your photoshoot early?A: Haha. That’s right. I practice non-stop every day of the year except for Lunar New Year and Chuseok. I try to secure as much practice time as possible.Q: And you arrived at the set earlier than any other staff member. It is known that you are punctual in your schedules.A: That makes me feel at ease. It’s better for me to come quickly and wait. I’m totally an FM. (t/n: * FM = a person who is very strict of the rules)Q: Are you competitive?A: Yes. I have a very competitive spirit. I have pride in the work I do, I accept compliments well, and I objectively look at my shortcomings and try to make up for them. Should I say it’s a challenge to myself? There is a sense of pleasure in keeping a promise to myself, like breaking a seal and saying, ‘I did it!’ (t/n: * literal meaning = ‘beating the masters in each gym‘ or ‘winning one after another‘)Q: What are the moments when Yeji’s professionalism is revealed?A: I feel professional when I am seen as a person who keeps their promises even for trivial things, and is self-managed. It’s rather more difficult to keep the small things. Trying to make sure there are no mistakes, even in small matters, with a consistent mind. I think it’s revealed in those kinds of things.Q: Yeji wasn’t good at the beginning. We heard that during the trainees month-end evaluations, you gradually rose from a vocal D+ to first place among all trainees.A: It was the second month-end evaluation. I was really surprised to see that score. The first one was even a C+! (laughs) I think I had a talent for dancing since I was young, but not for singing. I thought, “I’ll be in big trouble at this rate,” so I practiced singing intensively. Since it was a weekend (trainee) class, I went to school on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and there was no proper practice room space, so I used to practice alone at home. When everyone was taking a break, I would come out alone, turn on the recorder, and sing over and over again. So when I came in first place among all the trainees, everyone who watched me work hard congratulated me.Q: What kind of child were you in your childhood?A: A lively and bright child. I danced to cheer my working* mom up and got some pocket money. I didn’t even suffer through puberty so my mom never got upset [at me] to the point that she would ask, “How did you grow up like that?” (t/n: * ‘double-income parents‘ where both father and mother are working)Q: Since when did you want to become an idol?A: I loved dancing since I was young. I joined the after-school dance club when I was in the 5th grade of elementary school, and two weeks later was the school performance. But the teacher set me up as the center. I danced to ‘Good-bye Baby’ by Miss A sunbaenim, and after the performance, they said to me, “You’re really good at dancing.” My heart was pounding. I thought I should try* it properly. (t/n: * the actual term used is ‘to dig’ e.g delve into dancing seriously)Q: ITZY appears to be trying to stick to live while performing high-level performances, do you have any pride in that?A: I have a lot of pride [in that]. Whenever we receive the title songs, we say, “But how do we do this dance while dancing and singing?” But we always do it anyway afterwards. (laughs) Now, lip-syncing is actually more difficult, so we try to do live as much as possible under any circumstances. The stage is much more fun when we perform live. We can sing it differently from how we originally sang, or we can add something new. It can make the audience more excited.Q: We feel this every time we watch ITZY's dance live*, but don't you feel out of breath? (t/n: * dancing while singing live)A: Really out of breath. I practice thinking, “Oh, I really think I’m going to faint.” Since our performance involves lying down, sitting, and jumping, it takes a lot of training to do a stable live performance. I often sing while dancing in harmony with the members in the practice room. After pouring everything into it, I feel proud to see that we did our best on the stage. To us, dance live is ITZY's pride. We will continue to stick to it in the future.Q: How do you manage your physical strength?A: Actually, I don’t think dancing stamina comes from exercise. The only way to improve dancing stamina is to dance a lot.Q: Your pair choreography video with Ryujin always becomes a hot topic. It's powerful and intense. What do you think Yeji’s dance looks like from Yeji’s perspective?A: As for the dance style shown with Ryujin, I really like it. It is a cynical, neutral, yet conceptual dance. I think dancing also follows a person’s personality. My dance is energetic and I tend to use instantaneous power explosively.Q: If you were to become a unit someday, what concept would you like to try?A: I want to do a powerful boygroup-like dance with Ryujin, a soft girlgroup-like dance with Chaeryeong, show a cute and witty performance as the eldest and youngest with Yuna, and I want to form a unit with Lia where we can show off our vocals. While on tour, I often think, “Uh, wouldn’t it be fun to do this as a unit?“Q: ITZY is a team that has been promoting the concept of ‘let’s love ourselves.’ What aspect of yourself does Yeji love the most?A: I really love myself on stage. When I can see that I did my best at work. I also monitor a lot. Pointing things out like “Ahh, this is pretty okay?“, “Ahh, this wasn’t very good.“Q: Do you believe in yourself?A: I make an effort to do that. Ever since I was young, I was confident in my dream of becoming an idol, and I thought, “If it's not this, then I can't do it.“ I was lucky thankfully, and I became convinced through experience that my hard work was rewarded in return. It works because I do it. These days, there is a trend to want to achieve results without effort, but I believe effort pays off in the end. It's a belief that comes from that.Q: Are there moments when you doubt yourself?A: In our work, we are often not given enough time to practice and go out on stage. There aren’t many times when we can say, “Now that it’s 100%, let’s go.” It's really hard for me to trust myself right from the start. I need to be able to tell myself, “It’s okay, it's okay,“ but I don't have that kind of personality. On days when I make mistakes on stage, I get angry at myself and fume. But not everything can be perfect, so I try to control my mind so that I can overcome it and let go of my greed. But now I'm a lot more relaxed. Thanks to the members who always say, “No, you did well enough!”Q: I also felt it during the last interview [with] Lia, but ITZY has a strong attachment to the team, and seems to pursue the same vision as a team.A: It‘s a bit much like that. We are a team that makes a lot of suggestions to each other and honestly gives feedback like “I think it would be cooler if we improved this.” We actively appeal our opinions to the company. It‘s already been several years since we‘ve lived together. (laughs) Now we know how the other feels just by looking into their eyes. If there are areas where we clash, I try to lose.Q: What kind of leader do the members say Yeji is?A: First of all, the youngest often says, “I’m so glad that unnie is the leader.” (laughs) Other members often say “thank you.” Actually, I‘m not good at telling other people “I want you to do this.“ However, since taking on the position of leader, I am also learning how to communicate my opinions without causing offense.Q: I saw a small photo album containing Polaroid photos taken with the members in your VLOG. It was full of affection.A: I like to reminisce about those moments while looking at the pictures. Whenever we make a comeback or hold a showcase, we carry a Polaroid camera around and record ourselves. “Even if it’s a hassle to take pictures, it will be a real treasure later, so gather together quickly!” (laughs) If there's a product that goes out as an MD to the fans, I say, “Give me one too,” and put it in the album. When I look at the photo album with the members, I reminisce and say, “It was like that back then.”Q: What kind of team does Yeji think ITZY is?A: A cool team. First of all, I think we‘re good at our job. It's a pride not only for me but for the members as well. Our strengths are powerful and well-coordinated performances that give pleasure to those who see it. I also have great pride in my members. I think each ITZY member has a different personality, and I think each of them has excellent skills. We monitor each other even when we do individual activities, and praise each other when feeling discouraged. It's protecting each other‘s self-esteem. ITZY is a corpse if you take out confidence.Q: This is the golden age of girl groups. I wonder if there has ever been a time in K-pop history where so many girl groups were active and loved at the same time. What is it like living as a girl group in this generation?A: It‘s an honor to be working together as a girl group in this generation. I think there are a lot of girl groups that have their own distinct team colors, are respected, and cool. Because our colors are different, there is a lot to learn from each other, and because we know each other‘s difficulties better than anyone else, our presence becomes strength. We take care* of each other‘s well-being as we come and go. (t/n: *checking up on each other conveying it as a greeting or a regards)Q: What does Yeji believe in?A: My mom. When I was young, my mom was in the service industry, and there were so many people looking for my mom. My mom, who is kind and popular with people, looked so pretty. I often thought that I, too, wanted to become a good person that many people look for. When I can‘t trust myself, I think of my mom. “What would my mom do in a situation like this?“ then the answer comes out quickly.

NO WATERMARK

BET ON ME

"In this world, I think there are people who can run away and people who must not run away. I'm closer to the latter."

ITZY YEJI's eyes are clearer than ever.

[ MARIE CLAIRE x YEJI ]

It's your comeback after 8 months. Time flies very fast, right?
Time flies so fast. We've been busy with the tour and preparing for the new album at the same time. I spent a hectic time digesting the schedule, and the time for a comeback arrived before I knew it.
It must mean that you've lived diligently. Your new album will be proof of that. I'm sure the times you've been intensely contemplating are summarized on the tracks. What were the doubts and worries you had while working on <KILL MY DOUBT>?
<KILL MY DOUBT> is an album that brings focus to doubts among our various stories. It's different from what we've been working on for an album that draws consensus on the theme of 'I love myself'. While planning the new album, we selected the songs while thinking about what kind of new side/image we would show to the public, and it was a process where expectations and doubts overlapped. The new album has been carefully selected and composed of various stories on the theme of doubt. With this album, I hope the color of 'ITZY' becomes a bit more distinct/clear.
The title song ‘CAKE’ was composed by producer Black Eyed Pilseung. You worked for the first time with Black Eyed Pilseung?
I am the type to doubt everything at first. It was like that when choosing the title song. The song was so good that I had doubts about it. The recording process was very good. There's synergy with the composer. The composer gave us detailed directions, and I think an ITZY-like song was born as a result (of that). ‘CAKE’ is a song full of bright vibes, cuteness, and hipness that resembles summer.
The key criterion for selecting a song for an artist is attraction. What part of ‘CAKE’ left an impression on you?
The lyrics, 'Just eat it all up down![1]' was very impressive. 'Wang! Hago~[2]’ is an expression I don’t usually use, so at first I wondered if I was pretending to be too cute. But this part just keeps ringing in my head. It became a memorable part after listening to it. I thought that this part could linger in other people's heads and that it could become the point of the song. The other members also said that this part of the lyrics was the most impressive. It's a little embarrassing to use the expression 'Wang!' into words directly, but it depends on how you express it on stage. Wouldn't it come out cool?
(t/n: [1] Official English lyrics by Genie; [2] Romanized lyrics, the 'Wang!' part is with the biting gesture; 'Wang' also means 'King')Self-confidence seems like a floating cloud. It's just having the will to believe in yourself. Having a doubtful attitude is important. Sometimes doubt becomes the driving force behind growth/development. So what aspect of herself does the skeptical Yeji doubt?
I agree. I always live with doubts about everything. I don't think this aspect is bad. Even if I practice perfectly, I don't consider it perfect. I doubt that it's still not enough. When I set a goal, I try my best to achieve it, and end up mercilessly whipping[3] myself. Doubt is the driving force behind my growth. In order to get better, I live in doubt every moment.
(t/n: [3] Push one's self)K-pop aims for perfect performances. It's amazing to show the exquisitely exact same movements every time. But after performing for a long time, wouldn’t there be a desire to think loosely and move freely on stage?
I think we should lay the foundation for our performance through perfect practice and then express it freely. Without the basics, free expression doesn't seem free. It would appear to be a mistake. So when preparing for a stage, we add expressions after perfecting the basics. I showed a solo performance on our last tour, but only the vocals were given, and the stage was free to create on its own. It was a pity to stand still and sing, so I decided to do a performance, but the first thing I did was practice singing. The basics are vocals. After sufficient vocal practice, I was able to use a wide range of movements as I sang and danced with stable movements. Like this, we prepared the stage by adding elements little by little.
You made a comeback with a summer song. What kind of image is summer to Yeji? Which part do you consider summer romance?
I've been busy since my trainee days. I didn't have much time to think about enjoying the summer. Seeing that the pleasure of summer is not very memorable, I guess I didn't enjoy summer properly. I had fun while working. I also went to Jeju Island for the first time for a photo shoot. When the day comes when I can enjoy summer, I want to go to Hawaii.
Isn't it shocking that you visited Jeju Island for the first time after your debut?
My first overseas trip was after my debut, and even then I went there for work. I have been doing something to make my dreams come true. Now that you've mentioned it, I'm a little shocked as well. I guess I could have lived comfortably (relax), but it's surprising that I didn't even take short trips. Even now, I need to find a way to relax and enjoy the summer.
In other words, it means that you have been living so fiercely that you cannot enjoy normal daily life.
That's right! My life is busy, but I learn a lot in the process. It's a bit disappointing in some ways, but I'm content with my current daily life. A busy daily life is a blessing for me. I focus on the sense of accomplishment I get from working, and I'm grateful for what I gain.
It has been 4 years since your debut. Are the dreams and expectations you had 4 years ago still valid?
At that time, debuting was the biggest goal for me. Distant dreams are important, but the goal right in front of me felt more important. When we debuted, we were deeply moved by the fact that many people waited for us, who had nothing. That's why I can't forget our debut stage. With the opportunity to perform, I started to form bigger dreams. I want to enjoy the stage with more people, and I want to give strength to many people with better songs and performances. I want to stand on a bigger stage with a better image. I want to achieve that dream together with the members.
Now it seems you can see the audience while performing on stage. How do you feel when you look at the audience from the stage?
Sometimes, the fact that I'm on stage is unbelievable. Because what I imagined unfolds into reality. Whenever that happens, I feel thrilled and overwhelmed. I am grateful for the fact that my dream has come true. And I know very well that everything I experience on stage is not for granted. In particular, I realized how much our fans have been waiting for us since COVID-19. When I met the fans in person, I felt grateful and sorry at the same time. I feel like I've become closer to our fans, and the feeling of not wanting to disappoint has become stronger. I am working hard to achieve my dream of continuously making music.
You have a sense of responsibility for the love of your fans.
Yes, I really feel a sense of responsibility.
The overseas fans are also great. They even know all the ripples/waves of K-pop. From the outside, the K-pop scene looks like a torrent. New artist debuts or makes a comeback every week, and music trends shift. The pressure on the artists who play directly at the center of this scene must be considerable.
We often doubt ourselves. The same goes when we make songs. Even if we work hard and think, 'This song is so good!', the public's opinion may be different. On the contrary, I would think, ‘I'm a little worried about this song?’ but there are times when everyone evaluates it as a good song. As much as we prepared hard, there is no guarantee that the results will follow. Results are not necessarily proportional to effort, and I feel that luck is also important. And this kind of situation becomes the driving force that makes me work harder. There are many artists in the K-pop scene, and each has a different personality. I think there are very few teams of the same color. There are things we learn from watching other artists, but I think we should try something new while maintaining our own color. When I think about it, the conclusion comes to ‘ITZY is ITZY’. These values are also reflected in our work. Like the theme of this album, we put our aspirations to overcome doubts and become active in various appearance/aspect.
You tried your best, but sometimes things don't go your way. There are times when things just don't work out. There are times when you get frustrated. How do you overcome such a situation?
I feel that my job suits me well, but the whole process is not smooth. There are times when I feel physically exhausted or frustrated. But that's a temporary situation. The joy of producing good results offsets everything. I always praise myself, motivate myself, and strictly manage my condition. For example, if I don't feel well because I slept late, then it's my fault. It's hard to work under pressure, but the joy and happiness I get from the process is greater. Producing different results in various fields such as stages, pictorials, and advertisements gives me pleasure. The emotions felt at each result are also different. My job is diverse, so I do not know how to be bored.
But isn't it important to strike a work-life balance? Are you enjoying your life as a commoner Yeji, and not as an artist?
I just want to exist as a person. I feel a sense of stability when I exist as a complete me without clearly dividing the line between work and life. That's why I always act consistently when I work or when I live my life. There are moments when I feel like I lack a humane side because I only live by working. I'm not good at cooking, and I don't watch dramas either. I like getting results, so even if I watch a drama, I watch something that is beneficial to me. I hate randomly wasting my time. It may seem mechanical, but I like that and I'm happy. If you are satisfied with the results of your work, you will feel good, like you've grown up. That's what motivates me.
There are people who live like flowing water, and some people live as if they are on a tightrope. A person of firm character like Yeji is closer to the latter.
If my life is like walking on a tightrope, it may seem insecure/uneasy to others. But I'm used to living like this. Of course, sometimes I feel the need to relax. For example, I tend to eat quickly for my next schedule, but sometimes I try to enjoy my meal slowly. When I see team members who eat for 30 minutes, I want to have that kind of leisure too. That will make me feel at ease. I remember being stressed because I couldn't work quickly, even though I thought of taking my time. So I want to live a relaxed life that I have never enjoyed before.
To push yourself and to turn doubts into certainty, you need to have something to believe in. What does Yeji believe in?
Is there anyone without doubts or anxiety? I don't think there is any growth without worries. It's not that I try to be perfect because I'm not satisfied. I've never thought of my work or practice as perfect, but looking at the activities I'm doing now, there are many things I'll never be able to do again after this time. That's why it's most important to do the best I can in what I can do now. I'll do my best in everything and keep the tension (high). There may be some regrets after coming off the stage or after some time passes, but if I did my best, I might feel satisfied. I realized that if I do my best, I will have fewer regrets and that it is important to believe in myself no matter what.
You're trying and living hard enough to not have any regrets left.
The B-side track 'Bet on Me' from the album <KILL MY DOUBT> conveyed the message 'Bet on yourself'. I think everyone can relate to this message, and it will give strength to many people. In this world, I think there are people who can run away and people who must not run away. I'm closer to the latter. If you give up once, you keep giving up. You won't be able to try again. So I decided to 'Trust me, bet on me'. This mindset gave me more strength when I recorded it.
What kind of good music does Yeji judge[4]?
It's the music that fans like. If the fans like it, I'm happy too. Thank you to our fans and everyone who listens to our songs. Even simple feedback like ‘I like the song’ in the comments is precious to me.
(t/n: [4]the term used is to 'decide one’s view on something after giving thought to it'; as opposed to a similar term to judge 'to evaluate or appraise')

‘ITZY’ is back with the 7th mini album [Kill My Doubt]

Conversation with the five members of ITZY ahead of their midsummer comeback

ITZY believes. Even if the moment of falling sometimes comes, the one who will save me at that moment is myself who is strong. The 7th mini album <Kill My Doubt>, which will be released in midsummer, contains the faith of these five members. ITZY runs until the doubts inside are shattered.EXCERPT (YEJI's Q&A)At the same time as your debut in 2019, you had a premier showcase tour in major cities in the United States. 4 years have passed and you are back on the overseas stage again; what was the biggest change?YEJI Not long after our debut, COVID-19 hit. When I perform on stage in front of an empty audience, there are many moments where I doubt if I am doing well. At that time, I definitely felt that being a singer is not just a job that required a stage, but a job that required someone to watch the stage. Watching the audience fill the seats this time, I thought, ‘Yes, this is it’. At the same time, I think this thought crossed my mind as I looked at the members who have grown over the past 4 years. 'Ah, but we didn't waste our time.'The moment you doubt yourself, what spell do you tend to cast to get away from it?YEJI There are lyrics like this in the pre-released ‘Bet On Me’. “Because I’m the only one who believes in this anxious me.” I am a person with a very realistic disposition. My MBTI also belongs to the ‘T (Thinking Type)’ type. When I ask others for advice, there are many times when I want the answer to be extremely realistic. I think that whatever task is given to me, I have to do it myself and fully bear the consequences; and that is, I am the only one to trust myself in the end. So when I saw the lyrics of ‘Bet On Me’, I got a lot of comfort. I think I'll recall those lyrics in the future when I have doubts.Everyone seems to have the same mentality (laughs).YEJI In difficult situations, if you give up and let go, you will only run away. I guess I don't want to be someone who runs away. I'll break through first, then think about it. Even so, it can't be helped if the results aren't good, still I did my best. Such a situation is completely understandable. On the other hand, what is something about yourself that never changes over time?YEJI I think almost everything is the same. People around me say this sometimes. ‘Thank you for always being the same.’ To tell the truth, it's not that difficult for me to keep myself (the same). But I think I am a person who appreciates and wants to reciprocate when someone finds a good point in me that I didn’t know about and supports me. Looking back, from the beginning of my debut, people around me motivated me with positive words and held me tight, so I was able to stay the same.<Kill My Doubt>, which will be released soon, is an album about ‘doubt’. Then on the contrary, what does ITZY really believe in?YEJI To trust in myself. It's also my motto.

CHIC (CHINA) - MAY 2023

PHOTOSHOOT + INTERVIEW

INTERVIEW - YEJI PART

As a leader, do you usually take care of the members out of habit?
I receive more care in every day life, but on stage I think I'm more observant and considerate.
Outside of practice and performances, what do you enjoy doing with the members the most?
These days, lying down and watching Netflix is healing!
What do you think is your most similar aspect to a cat?
I used to think my eyes looked like a cat's, but these days I think my lips are becoming more like a cat's. These days, I keep hearing that my lips are pretty. Hehe.
What concept do you want to challenge on stage and an album in the future but haven't tried yet?
I want to try a totally dark concept. I think we're a group that fits well with a cool atmosphere, so I want to show you a more cool and attractive side.
Do you think you are rational or emotional?
I'm on the totally rational side, but everyone has emotional moments.
What's the first thing you do when you wake up?
I turn off the alarm and go wash up right away.
What is your favorite Chinese food?
Mala Xiang Guo (spicy stir-fry hot pot) and Guo Bao Rou (sweet and sour pork). I eat it often with the members.
Where in China would you like to travel to?
Chongqing is colorful and really pretty! If I have a chance, I want to go there.

ELLE KOREA - MAY 2023 (SOLO)

PHOTOSHOOT + INTERVIEW

4th generation K-pop icons FELIX and YEJI meets ELLE

ELLE May issue double cover stars
FELIX and YEJI's explosive energy

[EXCERPT] Stray Kids' FELIX and ITZY's YEJI simultaneously decorated the exclusive cover of the May issue of the fashion magazine "ELLE". Both FELIX and YEJI, who are leading K-pop's global popularity with energetic performances, perfectly portrayed Louis Vuitton's look that made (us) guess their future steps as fashion icons. After each photo shoot, an interview was held. As both Stray Kids and ITZY just returned from their world tour, the interview continued with questions related to the performance. (...)YEJI, who successfully completed the first world tour <CHECKMATE>, also said, “Through this tour, I realized once again that people can unite through our songs even though each country has a different culture. I have come to realize more that I am doing something that gives people strength,” she replied, revealing her pride as an artist. When asked about her efforts, YEJI showed a more matured side by answering, “I do my best every moment. If you do your best, there will be no regrets even if the results are not satisfactory. There are times when a stage that I thought was regrettable was not bad after seeing it again after a while. It's a moment when I realize the words 'do your best and see' more."Stray Kids and ITZY are preparing for their comeback in earnest and will continue to actively communicate with their fans in the future. FELIX and YEJI's pictorial, interview, and video can be found in the May issue of ELLE, on the website, and on ELLE's YouTube channel.

THAT'S LIT!

FELIX and YEJI are 22-year-olds enjoying the acceleration
without any absolute standards or limits.

Your concentration was good throughout the filming. What were you thinking (about)? Today, rather than making various facial expressions, I tried to create a chic and cool look as much as I can. While trying various body movements, I apply strength to my eyes then undo/relax them, then try changing the angles slightly so that it harmonizes well with my movements. That kind of look/appearance must’ve looked like I was concentrating. You just returned from your first world tour ‘Checkmate’ which spanned 13 cities. It was a journey that filled 8 months. When I returned back, I realized it was over. After the last concert in Bangkok, the fans gave me letters when I arrived in Korea. I also received a lot of long messages saying, ‘You have worked hard’ and ‘It was nice to see you grow’. We also had a dinner party for the first time, and it was nice to be able to say thank you to those who have been with us. There was also an incredible ‘ITZY’ cake that was made over three days.I guess you will be less likely to fly for the time being. I don’t think so (laughs). I’m going to Manila this week too.How do you usually spend your time on the plane? These days, I try to eat as much as I can. The drowsiness after a meal helps me sleep. I like to be in a daze, so I listen to music with my eyes closed, re-organize my playlist or organize my photo album, or do small but practical things.Have you come to realize how big the world is? If I hadn’t become a K-pop artist, I wonder if I would have been able to see so many countries, or if I would have never seen such a wide world. I always enjoy learning new cultures. Everything is really different. Then when I come back to Korea, Korea feels new. What I felt while on tour this time is that even though we are so different, people become one through our songs. It made me realize more that it is really possible for me to give energy to people. Is there a song that feels the most special even if you repeat the same setlist several times? ‘DOMINO’. If one collapses, the whole collapses, so it’s a song that captures the relationship between ITZY and our fans MIDZY, who are holding out for each other. In the middle of the concert, I added the words “MIDZY, you know I'm holding up when I see you” as an ad lib, but they waited for me to sing it at other performances as well. So, the members decided among themselves who would speak (the adlib) today (day of the concerts), and we all worked together and had fun making it like a kind of event. For the solo stage, you prepared Dua Lipa’s ‘Hotter than hell’. It felt like you've become more and more relaxed from the beginning to the end of the tour. At the start of the tour, there was a suggestion about what it would be like if YEJI show her dance. But I wondered if there would be another opportunity to focus on singing other than concerts. So I chose vocals/singing because I wanted to take on a new challenge. I was embarrassed at first, and looking back it was a pity to say that it wasn’t perfect, but the fact that I did it makes it meaningful. Is there a new aspect you want to show? Like the songs I often listen to, I want to show you how I would digest/sing a calm song that can express my voice beautifully, or songs with really explosive high notes. The more I stand on stage, the more confident I feel. I want to do it well.In May, the ‘Head in the Clouds New York’ performance is also ahead. There must be a different tension from a fan meeting or a solo concert. We just finished the tour, so I don’t think there’s any tension or anxiety. However, when we found out that we were headliners, we were surprised and said that it was such a good opportunity, and we talked about tearing it all up (the stage).Does the meaning of ‘fan’ changes little by little as you get older? At first, I wanted to do justice to the fans. However, I couldn’t. Are there any other people whom I’m thankful for who recognize me like this in their lives, and support me without any conditions? We haven’t met and talked to each other in person, but I’m so thankful that they’re able to understand things that I can’t express into words. Now I can afford to say a word to a new fan I meet. I’ve gotten pretty slick (laughs). Recently, we introduced a new 'dating for two' content, where two ITZY members talk to each other.Recently, you introduced a new content called ‘A Date of Two’ where two ITZY members talk to each other. You always spend time together, but isn’t it a bit different to shoot 1:1? In the past, I thought that I would know something new about the members through this kind of shoot. But now, there’s a “tikitaka” that came about because we know each other well. (t/n: tikitaka = in conversation, quickly exchanging words/going back-and-forth) When the members say to me, “You’re like this” even if I wanted to deny it, I couldn’t.A person who values present happiness, or a person whose future goals are the driving force. Which of the two is YEJI? There is not enough driving force to work without drawing (planning) a future. Of course, the support of the fans is a source of strength, but I think the desire to achieve it while looking at them becomes a goal for the future. That way I won’t have any regrets. I also really like to reminisce memories. I tend to collect pictures of the members that I took with a Polaroid in an album and take them out. If you want to leave good memories, you have to spend the present well, and if you spend the present well, won’t the future be better too? I think so.You seem to be truly enjoying yourself right now (the present). 200% job satisfaction! A photoshoot like today is too fun to call it a work, and I feel the most like myself when I dance and sing on stage. There are many things you can do with this job.Despite that, are there moments when exhaustion comes? Of course, sometimes the people around me sense it ‘like a ghost’ and come to me. Just hearing the words, ‘You’re doing so well’ really makes everything go away for me. I think this kind of personality would be a good fit for this job.If you’re not confident in your skills, I don’t think you’ll ever enjoy this job. Are you personally making an effort? I do my best every moment. There are times when my condition is not good. But that could also be an excuse. I do not like having regrets. If I did my best, I will have no regrets even if I am not satisfied with the results. There are times when a stage that I thought was regrettable is not bad when I look back over time. So I realized that it’s not for nothing when they say that you should do your best and that everything will pass. You’ve talked about the exemplary aspect of yourself. You also have a cautious personality. Are there times when you want to get rid of that image? I’ve never thought of it as a disadvantage, but there are times when I wonder what to do if the other person feels distant from me. I’m serious, but it might look like I made it up with only good stories. But there is no need to speak differently from my heart. I think I need to be a bit bolder. My cautious and thoughtful personality sometimes affects my work or expression. For example, in the lyrics of ‘WANNABE’, the part that says “Stop nagging! I'll do it on my own” doesn’t sound like my voice. But as I do it, it relieves my stress. Those are the emotions that people who listen to ITZY’s songs feel. It’s like saying something I wouldn’t normally say (laughs). It feels like I am expressing myself that I didn’t want to reveal through music. While on stage, I became arrogant in a good way. And I’m a leader who will look pretty good when I say “So what!” (laughs). (t/n: Dalla Dalla lyrics)If you had to choose a video that shows YEJI’s charm, would it be a ‘Studio Choom’ video? If you combine the number of views of ‘River’, where you appeared alone and ‘Break my heart myself’ which was performed with member RYUJIN, it is close to 100 million views. That’s right, both videos means a lot to me. My real personality and appearance on stage are bright, but I was able to show a dark side through my Studio Choom videos. There is also a feeling of pouring out more when there is an opportunity to freely express darkness, melancholy, cynical aspects and facial expressions through a piece of work/production. I think I was able to express it more explosively. Is there anything new about the Louis Vuitton look you wore today? It’s different from what it looked like, but it was pretty and unique. My legs look really long, too! I like to try things out, and when I try something new, I tend to listen to the reactions on the spot. In addition to ‘It’s pretty, it suits you well’, there are reactions like ‘Can you also pull off something like this?’, and today was such a day.You have recently shown interest in songwriting. I am trying various things. I also write lyrics and submit them. They’re never been adopted. It’s still in the early stages, so I can’t say for sure, but I have a great desire to challenge myself and try it.‘We are ITZY, we trust one another’ is ITZY’s slogan. What is trust to YEJI? Confidence. I tried a lot to love myself. I know how to see the pros, but I also want to look at the cons. The more the people around me have trust in me, the more I don’t want to disappoint them. I am doing something that can bring happiness to others. In order to live up to the trust I have received, I want to bring out the best I can and show it with confidence. I live with such confidence.
